There are frequent news reports of drivers who failed to yield or deliberately block ambulances even after hearing the sirens, sparkling wide spread of public anger and frustration.
According to Article 45 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, failing to yield immediately upon hearing an ambulance siren may result in a fine of NT $3,600 and the revocation of the driver's license. If a patient in the ambulance loses their life due to delays caused by obstruction, the responsible person may face criminal liability for negligent homicide, and could also be subject to a civil lawsuit for damages filed by the patient's family.
Next time you hear an approaching ambulance, be sure to pull aside right away. Not only will it keep you out of legal trouble - it could also help save a life. It is a simple act with powerful consequences!
