In Taiwan, many people choose to change their names for various reasons. However, a person's name is an important way to identify them. Frequent name changes may cause confusion for others and create problems in administrative or legal processes.
According to Article 9, Paragraph 1 of the Name Act, many valid reasons for changing your name are related to avoiding confusion in identity. For example, you may apply to change your name if: "you have the exact surname as someone else at your workplace or school," "Your name is identical to someone else's during a service review and the review agency notifies you," "Your name is the same as that of a wanted criminal," In such cases, the law does not limit the number of time you can change your name.
However, according to Paragraph 2 of the same article, if you apply to change your name because the characters are rude, inappropriate, or due to other personal reasons, you are only allowed to do so up to three times in your lifetime. This means that if you're changing your name for reasons like fortune-telling, superstition, or personal preference, and not to avoid confusion with others, you only have three chances to do so.
