Many health-conscious travelers like to bring health supplements or medicine back home from overseas trips. However, just like tobacco and alcohol, there are limits on how much medicine you can bring in to the country. Bringing too much can cause legal trouble, especially since importing medicine is strictly regulated.
For example, according to Article 22 of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, any medicine brought into the country without prior approval is considered illegal. Furthermore, Article 82 of the same law states that anyone who manufactures or imports illegal drugs shall be subject to punishment with imprisonment for a period of not more than ten (10) years and may, in addition thereto, be imposed with a fine of not more than NT$100,000,000.
Also, according to the "List of Quantity Limits for Personal Use Medicine Brought by Inbound Travelers," https://www.roc-taiwan.org/public/JP_collar/572215381271.pdf,
Travelers are only allowed to bring up to 6 different types of personal-use medication. Each type also has its own limit on how much we can bring.
Listed personal-use medicines and limits:
• White flower oil (3 large bottles or 12 small bottles)
Bagua Dan (12 small boxes)
• Ryukakusan (6 small boxes)
• Wind repellent oil (2 bottles)
• Zhongjiang Tang pills (2 bottles of red 340-pills pack or white 490-pills pack)
• Salonpas (2 boxes of 50 patches)
• Liu Ke Gan (2 bottles of 300 tablets per bottle)
• Seirogan (2 bottles of 400 tablets per bottle)
• Stomach medicine (1 bottle of 1000 tablets)
• Mentholatum (6 bottles)
• Capsicum plaster (2 boxes of 24 patches)
• Asahi Wanjin plaster (6 boxes of 5 patches)
• Alinamin (2 bottles of 290 tablets)
Other products:
• Oral vitamins (12 bottles, total not exceeding 1200 tablets)
• Tablets and capsules (12 bottles per type, total not exceeding 2400 tablets; for amounts between 1200 to 2000 tablets, sample import procedures should be applied to the Health Department)
• Chinese medicinal herbs and products (Herbs: 0.6 kg per type, total of 12 types)
• Chinese medicine products (12 bottles per type, total not exceeding 36 bottles or boxes)
• Contact lenses (6 pairs, either in box or loose packaging)
In addition, if the personal-use medication is classified as a "controlled drug," you must have a certificate or prescription form a hospital or clinic, and it must clearly state that the medication is for treating your own medical condition. The amount we bring must not exceed the quantity listed on the prescription.
Many of the medications listed above are popular among travelers, but remember - next time you return form a trip, don't bring more than the allowed limit. Doing so can lead to unnecessary trouble.
